A group of Denver medical professionals was in for a bit more than they bargained after the hospital they worked for announced a patient’s time of death. As it turns out, 5 nurses have since been busted after what they secretly did to the dead subject’s genitals a short while after – and now, they’re all suspended.
The incident took place in May at Denver Health Medical Center in Denver, Colorado, but the suspensions were just officially issued. According to The Denver Post, it all started when an incapacitated man was brought into the hospital for an undisclosed reason.
Almost immediately, the nurses on staff became obsessed with the man’s genitals. However, things would take quite a disturbing turn when the man died while in the hospital – but that didn’t stop these nurses.
As Denver 7 ABC reports, 5 nurses in total were found to have inappropriately viewed the man’s genitals and had even, at one point, opened his body bag to take a peek inside. Come to find out, the women were actually admiring the size of the dead patient’s penis and came back several times to do it while encouraging others to do the same.
Unfortunately for them, their biggest downfall would be when they started to talk about it around the hospital wing. Before long, another nurse had heard the group whispering and giggling about it and decided to report the incident as she viewed it to be extremely inappropriate.
Come to find out, the incidents took place between March 31 and April 3, 2017, but it wouldn’t be reported until much later. By the time the concerned nurse came forward on May 8, an entire month had passed.
From there, the police quickly became involved, but no charges would be filed in the end. “Multiple staff members viewed the victim while he was incapacitated, including after he was deceased,” a Denver Police report says. “The complainant, Risk Management for Denver Health, made a mandatory report.”
Unfortunately, there was no other evidence beyond word of mouth to prove that a crime had been committed, prompting police to leave the disciplinary actions to the nurses’ employers. Just like that, the hospital suspended 5 staff members for three whole weeks for what they had done.
For now, their identities are being kept confidential as police haven’t charged them with a crime. However, quite a few people have been left wondering if this wouldn’t be considered “abuse of a corpse.”
According to Colorado statute, abuse of a corpse takes place when someone “treats the body or remains of any person in a way that would outrage normal family sensibilities.” It’s not hard to imagine that stripping a dead man naked to admire and ogle over his penis would upset his family.
Furthermore, seeing how the hospital had enough proof to suspend the employees, you would think that it would be more than enough for police as well. At the end of the day, this is extremely disturbing as these nurses essentially proved that nothing is sacred anymore. If you can’t respect the dead and leave them to rest in peace, you shouldn’t be working in a position that grants you the opportunity to abuse a task that requires the utmost care.
