A five-year-old boy, his sister, and his cousin were walking home from getting ice cream, but sadly, they will never return the same way they left because of a driver’s nearly fatal mistake. After the three family members came face-to-face with a speeding motorist, they will never be the same, and it was all caught on terrifying video that’s difficult to watch.
Eighteen-year-old Carla Mendoza, her 20-year-old cousin Jackie Velasquez, and her five-year-old brother went out to get ice cream in the area of Oakland, California. They had just gotten off the bus and were almost home when the three crossed one last cross walk and were mowed down by a speeding four-door sedan in the middle of the street.
The driver stopped, but it was too late. He crashed headfirst into the three family members, sending two of them airborne. The little boy was dragged underneath the car. He was dragged under the vehicle for a few feet after the violent collision. [Source: Daily Mail]
“Before I knew it, I saw the lights flash before me. I remember the car hitting me.I was the first one to wake up,” said Carla Mendoza. The 18-year-old said she saw her 20-year-old cousin Jackie and her five-year-old brother laying on the ground both unconscious. “I almost thought they didn’t make it,” Carla said, according to KTVU. “It was pretty horrible.”
In the video, the pedestrians are smack dab in the center of the cross walk with a car fast approaching and showing no intentions of slowing down. Seeing pedestrians so far into the crosswalk, any rational driver would stop, but unfortunately, this one didn’t, instead, plowing into the three who couldn’t get out of the way fast enough. Shockingly, they all made it out alive but all sustained major injuries.
All of the injuries are extremely extensive, including 18-year-old Carla, who suffered a broken pelvis, broken leg, and multiple cuts bruises. Worse, Carla’s little brother Jonathan remains in the hospital, suffering from a spinal chord injury and is paralyzed. His mom says the boy may be in the hospital for up to a year, and it is unknown if he will be able to walk again. Jackie, Carla’s cousin, was thrown on the ground next to the vehicle. She has undergone surgeries to repair chest injuries and has broken ribs as well.
The street the accident took place on is apparently a frequently accident prone area. People in the community say this is the fourth accident to happen at that intersection just this year. They say there are always drivers speeding, blowing through the intersection and making it extremely dangerous for pedestrians.
All three of the victims are extremely grateful to be alive, saying, “Death was so close, but it’s not our time yet. We still have a long way to go.”
It is uncertain what kind of charges the driver is going to face, but in the state of California, pedestrians always have the right away. The driver was clearly not being carful and ruined a family because of their mistake. Such a terrible accident happened to this family, and all they wanted to do was go out for some ice cream. Instead, they all ended up injured, and now, a little boy may never walk again — all because someone was selfishly in a hurry.
