Cop Gives Homeless Woman ‘Gift,’ Then His Wife Finds Out What He’s Planning To Bring Home

In Albuquerque, New Mexico, a police officer has recently been called a “guardian angel” after he gave a drug-addicted and pregnant homeless woman a life-changing gift. However, no one really understood the sacrifice he had made until his wife found out what he was actually planning to bring home.

Police Officer Ryan Holets from the Albuquerque Police Department is a loving husband and father of four, and when he’s on the job, he makes sure that he does the right thing, regardless of how difficult the situation. In fact, he recently was hailed a “guardian angel” after what he did for a pregnant woman at the scene of a robbery.

It all began when Officer Holets was called to investigate a convenience store robbery. As he walked behind the building, he found a woman getting ready to inject heroin. He immediately turned on his bodycam and confronted 35-year-old Crystal Champ and her companion before he realized that she was pregnant.

“You’re going to kill your baby,” Officer Holets is heard on the bodycam telling Champ, who revealed she was “seven or eight months pregnant,” according to Fox News.

He then began to talk to her and learn more about her situation. It was in that moment that Officer Holets decided to intervene and gave the woman the ultimate gift of hope for her unborn child as he offered to adopt her unborn baby. “I just felt God telling me, ‘Tell her that you will do it because you can,’” he recalled.

Crystal Champ, who lives in a tent along a highway, has battled an addiction to heroin and crystal meth for most of her life. “I know how bad my situation is,” she admitted. “I know what a horrible person I am.” However, she later revealed that she also “desperately wanted someone to adopt her baby” so that the child could have a better life.

After Officer Holets had the conversation with Champ and already made the life-changing decision to adopt her baby, he got in his squad car to drive home and tell his wife Rebecca. He immediately walked up to her and told her exactly what had happened.

“He already knew my heart on the issue, and he knew that I would be totally onboard with it,” Rebecca explained. The parents of four had already discussed adopting but had wanted to wait to start the process when their youngest was 10-months-old. However, God intervened.

Just three weeks later, Champ gave birth to a baby girl who was named Hope. Unfortunately, because of Champ’s drug use, Hope was born addicted to opioids and what’s called neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). The syndrome can cause a lot of problems for growing infants like increased irritability, autonomic over-reactivity, and gastrointestinal tract dysfunction, as well as developmental disorders later in life. However, her condition is improving, and she is gaining weight.

After the birth, Champ gave Hope to the couple, who were better suited to care for her, and said goodbye. “She turns to me and says, ‘Take care of her for me.’ And I said, ‘I will take good care of her, and you take good care of yourself.’ It was super emotional,” Rebecca recalled, while her husband added, “I am so thankful and blessed and humbled that we are allowed to have Hope in our family.”

Since then, the Albuquerque Police Department has posted about the story on their Facebook page, and it has since gone viral. “Albuquerque’s very own Officer Ryan Holets has been nationally recognized for his generous act of compassion and humanity,” they wrote in the Facebook post. “We extend our admiration for Officer Holets as well as our support and best wishes to his family as they welcome their newest addition, baby Hope.”

It’s truly remarkable to hear stories about God intervening in everyday lives. This was no coincidence, and people like a story that proves God’s existence. Although Christians know and feel it, stories like this tend to pull others towards His love. So, share this story of Hope with those who need to be reminded that God does send us angels when we need them.
