A mother had quite the experience after having her youngest child. Unfortunately, the incident turned into a shocking series of events, spanning more than a decade, and it would later have doctors horrified to see what was inside the woman.
Tammy Peel, 39, from Essex, England, explains that she had her youngest child 12 years ago, but her life has been a complete roller coaster ride from the moment her daughter was born, as The Sun reports. With two boys, ages 8 and 9 when her daughter was born (now 20 and 21), she was more than excited about the newest addition, but things wouldn’t go like her previous two birthing experiences.
As Tammy explains, she was left suffering from chronic back pain after giving birth to her third child by cesarean section. “Something went wrong – she was born a picture of healthy, weighing six pounds nine ounces – but I was far from fine,” the mother said – but little did she know, her life was about to take a drastic turn.
“When I tried to get up after the surgery, I put one foot in front of the other and was hit with a searing pain,” Tammy said. “Taking steps was impossible and just like that I was left disabled.” Although she did everything doctors wanted her to do, she wasn’t getting any better, which resulted in the woman being hit with a debilitating depression.
Just like that, she let herself go. For weeks, she stayed inside, either on her couch or in her bed, eating nothing but junk food. In fact, she states that she had nothing but ice cream for several weeks. Eventually, the 4’9” woman swelled to a whopping 308 pounds and was so big that she had to be lifted out of the house by four men just to attend an appointment.
As one would imagine, doctors became increasingly worried about the woman and suggested that she try to lose weight – but that’s when more devastating news hit. At the peak of her weight increase, she was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
For Tammy, that was a wake-up call. “It was a shock and made me realize that I needed to sort myself out,” she stated – and that’s exactly when she decided to make a change. She changed her diet and eventually slimmed down to 168 pounds – but things were far from over.
Sadly, Tammy’s unfortunate series of events since the birth of her youngest daughter 12 years ago was about to come to a head when she saw something a bit different happening with her body. “I noticed that I had a boil on my groin, which isn’t uncommon as a diabetes sufferer,” she explained. “I thought that it needed some antibiotics as it looked a bit angry, so I went straight to the doctor.”
Another day went by, but when she saw that fluid was leaking from the blemish, she immediately traveled to the hospital. Tammy was told by medical staff that it was an abscess and that she would have to go into surgery to have it drained – and that’s when doctors were left horrified to see what was beneath her skin.
During the routine procedure the following day, surgeons realized she was actually suffering from necrotizing fasciitis, a condition that consists of a “flesh-eating bug.” In Tammy’s case, it had eaten its way through the woman’s body around her groin area.
The bacterial disease can start from a relatively minor injury, such as a small cut, but gets worse very quickly and can be life-threatening if not treated. People who suffer from diabetes are at risk from such infections because their condition weakens their immune system. [Source: New York Post]
Doctors removed the tissue affected by the flesh-eating bacteria, but after the surgery, Tammy states that she was “in the most extreme pain ever.” Furthermore, she went on to add that “a doctor sat me down and told me that they had to remove tissue from all my groin area, right down my leg, and up to my belly.”
Bedbound for 8 weeks, Tammy states that depression began to set back in. “I felt as if what defined me as a woman had been completely taken away,” she said. “My vagina will never be the same again but I’m learning to work with what I’ve got.” Fortunately, the wound healed, and although she’s not quite the same, she states that things are looking up.
Luckily, she has the support of a loving husband by her side, which she says she is eternally grateful for. Life certainly has a way of dragging us through the mud sometimes, but it’s cases like this that prove why it’s always important to be mindful of things and our daily decisions that turn into habits. After all, you never know if a single event is going to turn your life upside down and, 12 years later, leave you clinging to life. Always take care of yourself. You never know what’s just around the corner.
