Although lawlessness was often overlooked and even encouraged under former President Barack Obama’s administration, that is no longer the case. In fact, sanctuary cities granting unofficial amnesty to illegal aliens just got a nasty reality check courtesy of Attorney General Jeff Sessions – and now, they’re shaking in their boots.

There’s no arguing that liberal politicians who have invoked what they refer to as “sanctuary cities” have spat in the face of both the U.S. justice system and the millions of Americans here legally. Although it’s great for illegal aliens in that they have a space to reside in which they know they won’t be prosecuted for the criminal behavior, it doesn’t seem to benefit anyone else – unless, of course, you’re a Democrat who these people will vote for in the future.

Unfortunately for these cities and the leftist officials who thought it was a good idea to disregard the law, they have another thing coming. According to The Gateway Pundit, Attorney General Jeff Sessions has most recently announced that the Department of Justice will begin to “claw back” government funding from towns that are in violation of federal law.

Sessions highlighted a recent report from the Department of Homeland Security that showed more than 200 instances of jurisdictions failing to honor detainers in the span of just one week. The DHS also identified sanctuary jurisdictions in the report, which included New York City and all of Rhode Island’s state prisons.

The report detailed illegal immigrants who had been charged with sex crimes and murder that local jurisdictions failed to turn over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “The American people are not happy with these results,” Sessions said while speaking at the White House. Now, he’s “urging” states, as well as local jurisdictions, to comply with immigration detainers as a “condition” of receiving federal law enforcement grants. In all, DOJ programs are set to fork out more than $4.1 billion this year – but not everyone is going to see that money.

According to Sessions, “the DOJ will take all lawful steps to claw back any funds to a jurisdiction that willingly violates 8 U.S.C. 1373.” It pays to play by the rules, and this is especially true in this case as Democrat-run areas are often struggling for money on account of the excessive freebies they give to freeloaders willing to vote blue next election cycle.

The fact of the matter here is that the law is in place for a reason. Those in violation of it must either pay or be locked up behind bars as a consequence. Seeing how you can’t lock up a city in prison, well then, the best way to make sure they comply is to hit them where it hurts most, their wallets – and knowing how desperately Democrats love and need other people’s money, this one is going to sting.
