After a controversial vote in which the U.S. abstained so that the United Nations Security Council could pass a resolution demanding an end to Jewish settlements within alleged Palestinian territories, Israel is putting their money where their mouth is with a massive, bold move.
The Middle East’s only true democracy has announced plans to hit the UN where it hurts the most by withdrawing $6 million in funding to the organization. The cut to Israel’s $40 million annual contribution to the United Nations represents the portion of the UN budget allocated to four committees on Palestinian issues which have consistently worked against the best interests of the Israeli people.
According to Biz Pac Review:
Those committees include the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, the Division for Palestinian Rights, the Work of the Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Practices Affecting the Human Rights of the Palestinian People and Other Arabs of the Occupied Territories, and the Special Information Program on the Question of Palestine of the U.N. Department of Public Information.
“It is unreasonable for Israel to fund bodies that operate against us at the UN,” Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon said in a statement. “We seek to stop the practice where the UN is used solely as a forum for unending attacks against Israel.”

The announcement came just one day after Congress overwhelmingly voted in favor of a measure condemning the UN’s stance and chastising the Obama administration for abstaining in the Security Council vote.
This was a very diplomatic move by Israel, a nation which provides the UN with substantial amounts of funding each and every year. They have effectively demonstrated that they will not be pushed around, without withdrawing completely, though it is clear that option is on the table if the UN can’t get their act together.

President-elect Donald Trump also made it clear that the UN has gotten out of line after their most recent vote, saying he is considering cutting their funding as well. As the single largest funder of the UN, we are bound to see a major change in attitude once Trump officially takes the reigns on January 20.
