An Arizona man was taking a quick trip to get a few necessities at a local grocery store in Tempe when his day took a turn. As he approached the building, he noticed something odd within one of the shopping carts and decided to take a closer look. He quickly realized that it was an abandoned backpack, but what was hidden inside left him horrified.
The man, whose name has not been released, was walking into the Food City grocery store when he spotted something inside a shopping cart outside the building. He soon realized that it was a Jonas Brothers backpack that someone had left behind. However, he was stunned when the backpack moved, prompting him to take a closer look, and that’s when he saw what was hidden inside – a newborn baby girl wrapped in a blanket.
The man scooped up the infant and immediately went inside to notify the store manager of what he had found. Of course, the manager immediately called 911, where he was eventually connected with the local fire department. However, before she transferred him over, she checked on the baby’s health, according to the recently released audio of the call.
When the dispatcher asked if the girl appeared injured, the manager only said, “She’s beautiful,” according to Inside Edition. In the background, the cries and gurgles of the baby can be heard. “Oh my goodness,” the manager said. “The baby was just barely born right now.” He would later explain, “The [umbilical] cord was cut, but it’s still attached.”
It was later reported that the grocery cart was located only feet away from a fire station, which is considered a safe haven in the state of Arizona. Under state law, new parents can surrender an unharmed newborn within 72 hours of birth to a hospital or fire station without facing criminal charges. Now, officials are still seeking more information about the abandoned newborn.
The baby has since been taken to a hospital, where she has been given a clean bill of health, according to AZ Central. In addition, a photo of the adorable little girl has since been posted on the Tempe Police Department’s Facebook page, along with the backpack in which she was found, as police desperately try to learn the identity of the newborn and her parents. If anyone has any information regarding the case, they’ve been asked to contact Tempe Police at 480-350-8311.
Having a baby can be a bit overwhelming for anyone. However, many states do offer an escape for parents who feel they will never be able to raise a child, known as the safe haven laws. If you want more information on your state’s safe haven law, you may go here. It is imperative that if you are considering dropping your baby off at a safe haven location that you do it appropriately, not placing them somewhere else – like in a backpack at a nearby grocery store.
Thankfully, the baby was found by a man who took her to safety because the story could have had a much different ending. Although this little girl may have had a rough beginning, we can all hope that she will be placed into a home that will offer her the love and affection she deserves. Although her biological parents may not have wanted her, someone will, and another thing is certain – God loves and has a plan for every single one of these little blessings. Always give the child a chance at life, even if it’s not a life with you, and do so in a way that’s best for them.
