An Arkansas woman in her late 80s was horrified when a 19-year-old thug broke into her home in the early morning hours and stepped toward her when she demanded that he leave. Now, the story has gone viral after the punk got a brutal dose of instant justice from the elderly woman, and rightfully so.
According to local news source WREG, the home invasion took place at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 29, 2017, in Marion, Arkansas. Police said that 19-year-old Cody Smith broke into the elderly woman’s home after he wrecked his car and left the scene of the accident. Cops aren’t sure what Smith’s motive was for breaking into the woman’s home, but what is certain is that karma was not on his side.
Crittenden County Sheriff’s Department said ADT, an alarm company, was alerted to a burglar alarm at the residence on Marion Lake Road at 3:31 a.m. on Sunday. According to police, ADT called the homeowner, who is in her late 80s and lives alone, and then, they alerted officers from Marion and Crittenden County requesting immediate assistance.
The victim told investigators that when she confronted Smith after he broke into her home, she called out to him and demanded that he leave immediately. Instead of leaving, the victim said that Smith advanced toward her. This mistake would prove to be fatal for the young thug. The elderly woman raised her firearm and shot Smith instantly dropping him to the floor. Smith died a short time later as a result of his gunshot wound. The fear and horror that poor lady must have felt in those moments are unimaginable.
John Rimmer, a neighbor of the elderly victim, spoke with WREG and told a reporter that police investigators suspect Smith may have been disoriented after crashing his car. “Of course, it makes you be a little more concerned about your neighborhood if you have people that are breaking into homes. We heard he was under the influence of something and wrecked his car,” said Rimmer. “At first it was told that he thought he was walking to his house. I didn’t know where his house is, in this neighborhood I assume,” he added.
Other neighbors told WREG that Smith lives close by but not in the same neighborhood. Rimmer hit the nail on the head with his summation that the teen had no business breaking into his neighbor’s home regardless of his perceived state of confusion. “It’s still sad that a man that age, a young man just starting his life for whatever reason is taking those kinds of steps and ends up losing his life for it,” said Rimmer. The shooting is under investigation and no charges have been filed against the elderly victim.
In my opinion, a thug is a thug. I don’t care what color a person is or background they come from. When a grown man makes the decision to get behind the wheel of a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or any other substance, then wrecks that vehicle before breaking into an innocent person’s home, he is a thug. Unfortunately, the real victim is getting brushed aside by all of Smith’s sympathizers who say he was a good boy and never would have hurt anyone.
One Facebook user named Patricia Reed caused immediate outrage by making the following statement in regard to Smith: “Another thug underestimated a senior, she did what was right, and what so many others will do. They know the risk of breaking into someones home now they need to take into consideration seniors didn’t become seniors by being naive.” That was all it took for people who knew Smith to go on the defensive.
Another Facebook user named Tyler Thorn, who says he knew Smith, said, “No, he wouldn’t of done anything to her. 9 times out of 10 she shot him as soon as she seen him because she was scared and had to have a story to tell cops to get her out of trouble. And nobody knows for a fact that he went in by mistake, but neither do any of y’all know that he didn’t go in by mistake.” I’m sorry but Thorn seems a little in over his head to be objective here. Smith was reportedly under the influence of an unknown substance. Why on earth should an innocent victim in her late 80s have to take the chance that a man who has just forcibly entered her home at 3:30 in the morning isn’t going to hurt or murder her?
The bottom line here is that the elderly homeowner had every right to protect her life and her property. She should not be disparaged for her decision to shoot Smith instead of waiting to see what he would do to her. The liberal media will for sure come out swinging as they vilify the elderly victim for having a gun and using it to protect herself. Let’s not forget that it was Smith’s choice to drive under the influence before wrecking his car. It was also his choice to leave the scene of the accident, and it was his decision to forcibly enter a complete stranger’s home. He is the only person responsible for his death. I wonder if his family and friends would be as aggressive in their defense of his actions if he had killed an entire family, including young children, with his car.
There have to be absolutes in life and a thug is as a thug does. Thank God, the victim in this horrific story knew that she was primarily responsible for her own safety. She had every right to protect herself. Every week in our country, the 2nd Amendment continues to provide law-abiding Americans like this elderly woman with a way to fight evil when it comes knocking, or rather, breaking in. Once again, we have good proof that an armed society is a just society.
