A United States charter flight was hired by the South African government to transport millions of Rand (South African currency) from Munich, Germany to Durban, South Africa. However, when the crew stopped in Harare, Zimbabwe, they noticed blood had dripped from the plane. Once the ground crew investigated the landing gear, they were more than shocked to see what was hidden inside.
The U.S. based Western Global Airlines charter flight thought they were making a simple trip from Munich to Durban to deliver millions in Rand. However, while the ground staff inspected the plane in Zimbabwe, they noticed blood was dripping off the plane and onto the runway.
The crew originally dismissed the occurrence as the result of hitting a bird, according to the African News Agency. Once they peered into the landing gear, the real culprit was shocking – a man’s body was inside.
According to Daily Mail, Western Global Airlines has explained that “the body is thought to have been a stowaway who boarded the Boeing MD-11 freighter aircraft, which is leased to Network Airline Management, before a previous flight.”
“Western Global’s aircraft fly for Network Airline Management from Europe to Africa several times a week on a regular basis. Western Global provides the aircraft and crew and Network Airline Management provides the cargo, loading and unloading, and ground security as required,” explained a spokeswoman. “This particular flight was from Germany to South Africa, we are told for the South African Government. During a routine fuel stop in Zimbabwe, a body was found in the lower compartment. The body is presumed to be a stowaway who may have entered the airplane during a previous stop. The situation is currently under review.”
“The police are now handling the issue and the plane, which is owned by Western Global Airlines, has been grounded at Harare International Airport since Sunday,” chief executive of the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe, David Chawota, explained. Since the announcement, the Zimbabwean Police have impounded the plane while they continue investigating. Although it hasn’t been confirmed, it is rumored that the plane’s crew, said to be two Americans, a South African, and a Pakistani, have been arrested.
Although planes are known to hit birds, one would think that there would be an extremely different blood pattern between a bird that ran into a plane or blood dripping down the side from a human body in the landing gear. Hopefully, the police will be able to get to the bottom of their investigation and find out exactly what happened inside that plane. It will be interesting to know what else they uncover in this peculiar case.
