A model from California experienced the horror of a lifetime after realizing that her feet were starting to literally rot out from underneath her. Unfortunately, doctors saw no other choice but to amputate both her legs — and it was all because of a common habit that many women have.

We’ve made great strides as a civilization on many different fronts, and one of the biggest successes we’ve seen has been in improving our quality of life. Everywhere you look these days, there are creature comforts — things to make us more comfortable and things to make life, well, less of a hassle.

Of course, as is always the case with things like this, these same things meant to make life easier often times come with their own hazards. Sadly, a model from Los Angeles by the name of Lauren Wasser found this out the hard way as her feet began to rot all because of a habit that many women have.

It all began in 2012 after Lauren’s mother hadn’t heard from her in quite some time. Doing as any concerned parent would, she reached out to her daughter. However, she was unable to reach her and became distraught when she couldn’t get a hold of her. So, she called the police who sent someone out to do a welfare check — and that’s when things went from bad to worse.

Much to their surprise, officers found Lauren face down in her bedroom. She was unconscious and covered in her own feces and vomit. An ambulance was immediately called, and as Mail Online reports, it was just in the nick of time as the model was found just “10 minutes from death.”

Once at the hospital, medical staff worked quickly to figure out the problem. Lauren had a temperature of 107, had suffered a heart attack, and her organs were shutting down. As a result, doctors put her in a medically induced coma and called for an infectious disease doctor.

Fortunately, that’s when they started to get answers — and nearly everyone was shocked to learn the frighteningly simple reason why Lauren was so sick. Without hesitation, the specialist instructed hospital staff to see if Lauren Wasser had a tampon in. Sure enough, she did, and doctors were able to pinpoint the problem, diagnosing her with what is known as Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS).

However, things were far from over as the damage was already done. With Lauren’s feet rotting out from beneath her, doctors decided to cut off her right leg and the toes of her left foot to keep the gangrene from spreading any more than it already had.

Although the model was able to recover and has adapted to life with a prosthetic, she’s still haunted by the effects of that tampon. Most recently, the model was forced to have her other leg amputated as she was in “daily excruciating pain” from the TSS she once suffered through.

Apparently, her body had begun to produce calcium, which caused the bones on her remaining foot to grow as her brain’s way of trying to get the missing toes back. In the past, she has needed additional surgeries to shave down the new bone growth, but she’s recently decided that enough is enough.

Now, with two below-the-knee amputations, she’s on a mission to ensure this doesn’t happen to anyone else. Seeking to use her horrific story to warn others, she’s even taking her concerns to Congress. As an advocate, Lauren is pushing for legislation that would require the National Institutes of Health to determine whether feminine hygiene products are safe through additional testing.

The bill has been introduced 10 times but has never come to a vote before the House of Representatives. Along with requiring businesses and government to do their part in keeping the American people safe, she’s also focused on raising awareness in any way she can. So far, she has done a pretty good just through social media platforms and has even given a TED Talk.

As previously noted, there are many things out there that are meant to make life easier that can have the opposite effect if used incorrectly. However, the fact that so many women use this product to deal with an often unpleasant aspect of life and expose themselves to this potential harm every month is downright scary.

Labels on tampon boxes specifically tell users to change the product every 4 hours while warning them about the risks of TSS. Always make sure you use products as they were intended. Although this may seem like common knowledge to some, Lauren didn’t know, and it almost cost her life. So, help her out in warning others. She wants to ensure other women don’t suffer through what she did — and that’s a cause anyone can support.
