Over the weekend, violence erupted in Charlottesville, Virginia, when white nationalists held a “Unite the Right” rally on the UVA campus. In the days which followed, protests broke out around the country in response, and at one demonstration in Durham, North Carolina, a Confederate statue was destroyed. The culprit was subsequently jailed, and now, President Donald Trump has added insult to injury with just two words.
The incident in Charlottesville ignited a chain of protests in cities across the nation, including one demonstration organized by the Worker’s World Party, a Marxist-Leninist group founded in 1959 as a hard-line offshoot of the more moderate Socialist Workers Party. This protest in North Carolina has garnered the majority of media attention because it was in Durham that 22-year-old activist student Takiyah Thompson helped destroy a historic statue.
Thompson used a ladder to climb atop the nearly century-old statue of a Confederate soldier and place a rope around it, which her cohorts then used to pull the monument to the ground, destroying it. At a news conference the next day, Thompson said, “I did the right thing. Everyone who was there — the people did the right thing. The people will continue to keep making the right choices until every Confederate statue is gone, until white supremacy is gone. That statue is where it belongs. It needs to be in the garbage,” she concluded, according to Daily Caller.
Well, she can get on her high horse all she wants and claim to have done “the right thing,” but at the end of the day, she broke the law, and she was arrested. She also received quite the array of charges, including disorderly conduct by injury to a statue, damage to real property, participation in a riot, damage in excess of $1,500, and inciting others to riot where there is property damage in excess of $1,500.
To add insult to injury, President Donald Trump tweeted a message for Thompson on Thursday, calling her frivolous actions “so foolish.”
“Sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart with the removal of our beautiful statues and monuments,” wrote President Donald Trump, according to ABC11. “You can’t change history, but you can learn from it. Robert E Lee, Stonewall Jackson – who’s next, Washington, Jefferson? So foolish! Also, the beauty that is being taken out of our cities, towns, and parks will be greatly missed and never able to be comparably replaced!”
The liberal left has consistently tried to rewrite history, branding the GOP the party of racism and intolerance, when it was our nation’s first Republican president who ended slavery and Republicans who fought for minorities to have equal rights. Given the left’s track record, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that they are now destroying historic monuments. They must be stopped before more of our history is lost forever to a violent and destructive cause.
