It’s probably safe to say that one Utah officer wasn’t considering the surveillance cameras in the waiting area outside the courtroom or the fact that he could become the focus of a lot of social media attention if the video got out when he decided to take on an unruly toddler. However, once the video hit Facebook, it quickly started going viral as viewers got a good look at how he handled the little girl.

Officer Kevin Norris of the Orem Police Department found himself waiting to appear at a court hearing when he noticed a father, awaiting his own hearing at a Utah County court and attempting to wrangle his rambunctious two-year-old daughter. That’s when the officer decided it was time to step in, and his actions with the toddler were captured on the court surveillance cameras.

The footage was later posted to the Orem Police Department Facebook page, where it’s since gone viral for good reason.

Last week, Officer Norris was waiting to testify in a hearing when he saw a very rambunctious two year old waiting with her father (Who also had a court case) in the lobby. The father had a court case scheduled and was unable to leave the little girl at home. When it was time for his case to be heard he tried to take his daughter into court with him. However, kids are not allowed in the court room for various reasons and the girls father didn't know what to do…….

That was until Officer Norris offered to babysit for the man. You'll see from the court surveillance video that the little girl took to Officer Norris as he walked her around, getting drinks of water and treats from the Deputies at the front door. He pulled up some cartoons on his cell phone and the little girl climbed up onto his lap and she must've been worn out from all running around she had done because she quickly fell asleep on Officer Norris' lap.

You can tell that Officer Norris is a father first and police officer second!

The Utah cop had a heart of gold, offering to help the dad in need of a babysitter. As Yahoo! News explains, “When the man’s scheduled hearing time arrived, he tried to take his daughter into court, where children aren’t allowed. The dad was at a loss for what to do when Officer Kevin Norris of the Orem Police Department stepped in to the rescue.”

Along with the video, the department posted, “You’ll see from the court surveillance video that the little girl took to Officer Norris as he walked her around, getting drinks of water and treats from the Deputies at the front door.” Officer Norris continued to entertain the child, eventually taking her onto his lap and showing her cartoons on his cell phone. After all the grand adventure of the day, the tenacious toddler finally tuckered out, falling asleep in the officer’s lap.

“You can tell that Officer Norris is a father first and police officer second!” the post about the incident concludes, and we couldn’t agree more. Thankfully, the video has been viewed  over half a million times, receiving almost 20,000 “likes” and over 4,000 shares, giving this officer the positive attention he deserves.

During a time where our society tends to be critical of police, this officer made a connection and a lasting impression with this little girl. Beyond that, he showed the nation another way in which law enforcement are willing and ready to serve those in the community that they also risk life and limb to protect. The majority of police officers are kind and caring individuals, who chose their profession because they have a servant’s heart and wish to truly make a difference in their communities. For that, they deserve all the attention they can get, a huge round of applause, and a sincere thank-you from the rest of us.
