Patreon has become a go-to crowd-funding website for content creators online. But in recent months, they have publicly banned users — all of whom hold to anti-leftist views. It appears the site used by many to support their work is going after conservatives. Now, an unlikely figure is shutting down his Patreon account in an act of solidarity.
Just a few short years ago, Patreon was a little-known website, used by musicians to raise cash to produce their indie works. Since then, it has grown into a major crowd-funding service that rivals websites like Kickstarter.
Patreon allows fans and supporters of a person or group to provide funds for them on a monthly basis. It works like a subscription service. A user agrees to pay a predetermined amount (of their choosing). Each month that money is supposed to go to the content creator. Patreon has been used to fund websites, blogs, podcasts, and many forms of online content.
But like so many other Silicon Valley darlings, Patreon is run by far-left liberals. They have made it known in the past how they oppose the current administration. When it was announced in March 2017, that Trump was mulling a cut to government funding of the arts (a small measure to save taxpayers millions), Patreon was quick to send out a message to all its users, shaming the government.
It doesn’t take a genius to see whose side Patreon’s owners are on. And it’s not Trump-support conservatives.
In recent months, the site’s “Trust and Safety” committee (a creepy sounding group) has decided to ban numerous, high-profile conservatives and ant-leftists from their platform. They claim they violated their terms. But the real reason is that Patreon is trying to cut support from anyone whose views differ from their own.
This shocking act of bias and censorship has not gone unnoticed, even by liberals. And a few are taking a stand. Liberal commentator Sam Harris, in an act of solidarity with those banned, has shut down his Patreon account, urging his users to support him in other ways. In a statement, he made it clear why he was ending his relationship with the website.
On Sunday evening, famed atheist Sam Harris fired off a tweet announcing he would delete his Patreon account on Monday to protest Patreon banning several content creators from using their platform. Harris wrote:
“As many of you know, the crowdfunding site Patreon has banned several prominent content creators from its platform. While the company insists that each was in violation of its terms of service, these recent expulsions seem more readily explained by political bias. Although I don’t share the politics of the banned members, I consider it no longer tenable to expose any part of my podcast funding to the whims of Patreon’s “Trust and Safety” committee.”
Patreon has banned several personalities from the platform, including British YouTuber Carl Benjamin, better known as Sargon of Akkad, commentator James Allsup, and Milo Yiannopoulos. In July 2017, Patreon banned former Rebel Media personality Lauren Southern. [Source: The Daily Wire]
This same “Trust and Safety” committee allows far-left creators to continue to raise funds, including groups that incite violence.
There are several far-left users who appear to be blatantly violating Patreon’s Community Guidelines. These users are raising thousands of dollars each month and are actively using that money to organize and advocate for violent and often illegal criminal activity. [Source: Far Left Watch]
Clearly, there is a double-standard going on at Patreon. They claim to want to protect their users from dangerous accounts, yet they continue to let groups that advocate violence to raise money. Simply because their politics agree with those of Patreon’s staff.
Sam Harris’ choice to shut down his Patreon account is a brave one. Making money online isn’t easy. Especially for an independent creator. Options for safe, consistence sources of income are few and far between. Harris is risking significant cash by shutting down his account. Many of his users might not switch over to his new system.
This isn’t the first time Harris has broken from his liberal allies to stand up for his principles. A few years ago, Harris enraged liberals when he admitted that radical Islam is a serious threat, one that many Muslims embrace around the world. He even managed to trigger vapid leftist Ben Affleck.
Hopefully, his move will wake up more people to the reality that Silicon Valley thinks it can become America’s Big Brother. These leftist companies are trying to censor, silence, and ban anyone that believes in conservative principles or supports President Trump. They think they can win.
