Sheila Jager was the first girl that Barack Obama proposed to, but that is far from the most noteworthy point about her relationship with the former president. Now that Obama is gone from office, the truth about his real life continues to be exposed, including what happened with the girl before Michelle.
According to The Washington Times, Obama proposed to Sheila Miyoshi Jager in 1986, when he was 25 and she was 23. In the book, Rising Star, Pulitzer-prize winning author David Garrow chronicles how Jager rejected Obama’s proposal because her parents thought that she was too young.
Jager, who is of Dutch and Japanese ancestry, according to Independent, described her relationship with Obama as “an island unto ourselves,” as Obama would “compartmentalize his work and home life.” She quickly realized that Obama “had a deep-seated need to be loved and admired.” Obama never stopped compartmentalizing, as we now know, as Jager was “virtually written out of Obama’s book, Dreams From My Father.” In that book, Jager and two other girls were combined into a single character for the sake of brevity, reports PerezHilton.
After the proposal, Obama and Jager continued to date, but as his political aspirations grew, their relationship’s downfall started to become apparent. Jager has said, “I remember very clearly when this transformation happened, and I remember very specifically that by 1987, about a year into our relationship, he already had his sights on becoming president… [The] resolution of his black identity was directly linked to his decision to pursue a political career.”
Reportedly, Obama would never bring Jager around his community-organizing friends, including controversial pastor Jeremiah Wright. One friend even recalled hearing Obama say, “If I am going out with a white woman, I have no standing here.”
Fox News explained that another book said, “at the time, it could be seen as a political liability for a black politican in the area to have a wife that was not African-American.” So, America’s so-called “first black president,” who was a staunch opponent of racism, distanced himself from a girl that he loved enough to marry because she had the wrong skin color.
In another shocking revelation, Garrow states that Obama continued to see Jager even after he had started dating the future Mrs. Obama. “Barack and Sheila had continued to see each other irregularly throughout the 1990-91 academic year, notwithstanding the deepening of Barack’s relationship with Michelle Robinson,” Garrow wrote. Jager reportedly said, “I always felt bad about it.”
While the details of Obama’s past may seem trivial to some, it is clear that America’s self-proclaimed “most transparent” president has been hiding the truth about his real life for decades. Political ambition will cause a person to do that, especially in the liberal Democrat Party, where authenticity always takes a back seat to political narratives. The good news is, this lack of authenticity has given us a new kind of president in Donald Trump, and if Trump continues to succeed, we may never go back to the fake leadership we had known under Barack Obama.
