A 9-year-old girl was playing in her backyard in Lowell, Indiana when she noticed something a bit unusual in her family’s pigpen. After she walked over to take a closer look, she was left screaming in horror after she made an unexpected discovery.
Elysia Laub was simply playing in her backyard when she saw something unusual in the family’s pigpen. At first, she thought it was just one of their piglets, but once she got a little closer, she quickly learned that it wasn’t a piglet at all – it was an infant.
As soon as Elysia realized what it was, she screamed for her mom, Heidi. “It just freaked me out,” she admitted, according to CBS News. “I didn’t know what it was.”
It was believed that the infant had been placed in the pigpen sometime during the night. It was “wrapped in a black towel, with the umbilical cord and placenta still attached,” according to Pix 11. Luckily, the baby was taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital for emergency medical treatment but is expected to be okay. Police have yet to locate the child’s mother.
Lake County Sheriff John Buncich is considering Elysia to be the guardian of the infant. “I didn’t do this myself. Somebody helped me,” Elysia admits. “God. He put me in that place.”
Anyone with any information regarding the baby is urged to call the Lake County Sheriff’s Department’s Report-A-Crime Hotline at 1-800-750-2746. Under the Indiana Safe haven Law, a child less than 30 days old can be dropped off at a Fire Station, Police Station, or Hospital Emergency Room if parents feel they cannot care for the child. Unfortunately, this mother chose to abandon her child instead.
Thankfully, this young girl noticed something unusual in her backyard. If she hadn’t, there’s no way to tell how long the child would have gone unnoticed. God was definitely at work and helped get the infant into safe hands where she belongs.
