After a strange suitcase was discovered outside of a New York deli, police officers and bomb-sniffing dogs were dispatched to the scene. In a terrifying find, they discovered a bomb inside the suitcase, along with a whole lot more, and here’s what we know so far.

Police reviewed surveillance video and came to identify the suspect, a 38-year-old named Arsenio Mason, who told officers that he was “looking for the suitcase,” a confession of sorts that has some dumbfounded.

Inside the suitcase was a fuse assembly from a flash grenade screwed to a metal filing attached to cardboard tube filled with flash powder. Bolt cutters, a knife, and a screwdriver were also found. In a report, police described the contents of the suitcase as a “flash bang grenade,” which is commonly known as “a non-lethal explosive used to blind and stun.” Later reports indicate that police also found methamphetamine.

Surveillance video captured Mason as he dropped the suitcase near the deli and walked away. Authorities caught up with him at a bus station and brought him in for questioning. Mason stated that he lives in New Jersey and is heading for Seattle. He does not have a criminal record in New York but has multiple prior arrests in Oregon, Alaska, Washington, and California.

Mason is charged with reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a weapon, possession of burglary tools, and criminal possession of drugs. A call to his attorney has gone, for now, unanswered.

The NYPD Bomb Squad took the suitcase to their gun range at Rodman’s Neck so that it could be safely detonated.

At this time, people are frightened and wonder about Mason’s history, as well why he would leave a suitcase of this nature in public then wander away. Of course, many believe that he had violent intentions. Could he be connected to an organized terror group? Time will tell.

With all of the controversy in the news these days, surrounding the transformative administration of President Donald Trump, events such as these confirm Trump’s stated concerns regarding Homeland Security. So far, Trump is presiding as a leader who wants to secure our borders and bring swift justice to those who would harm us. The actions of characters such Arsenio Mason should influence Trump’s detractors to stop playing politics and listen to him.

Now is not the time for our leaders in Washington, D.C. to play petty politics. It’s time to make America safe again.
