During a Monday appearance on Fox News Channel’s Special Report, conservative commentator Charles Krauthammer did not mince words when it came to the upcoming Democratic filibuster against Judge Neil Gorsuch’s nomination to the Supreme Court. Krauthammer dropped a truth bomb about Gorsuch so brutal that even absent-minded Democrats won’t be able to ignore it.
The Democratic filibuster is expected to result in Republicans modifying Senate rules by invoking the so-called “nuclear option” to get Gorsuch confirmed. According to Krauthammer, it’s pretty darn dumb for Democrats to play all their cards against a Supreme Court nominee who doesn’t even change the ideological balance of the court.
“[I]t makes no sense. It’s totally illogical if you’re a Democrat. The fight is going to be over the next nominee. As you say, this nominee does not alter the balance of the court ideologically,” said Krauthammer. “The next very well could, whether it’s a Kennedy, or a Ginsburg, or a Breyer, it could be a radical change, a semi-radical if it’s a Kennedy, and that would have an effect. And you’d expect the Democrats to want to save their ammunition, but they are expending it here.”
“This is about Trump. It isn’t about Gorsuch. And that I think, is their motive for doing it,” added the Fox News columnist. “I think they are, in some ways, suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome, in the sense that they might not be personally deranged by his presence, but they have a base that has not recovered from the election, and they insist that anybody who represents them and does not want to face a primary fight, or have a demonstration outside their house on a weekend, is — will oppose what Trump is doing.”
Charles Krauthammer is absolutely right; it makes zero sense to challenge Gorsuch when the real fight will come with Trump’s next nominee to the Supreme Court. Adding merit to his statement is the fact that Gorsuch was easily confirmed to the Appeals Court a decade ago, with no opposition from Democrats. Since then, he’s had an exemplary record, which should have made the job of confirming him this time around even easier.
The Democrats have never been particularly good at strategy, which is why they suffered such an embarrassing and humiliating loss in the 2016 election. Apparently, they don’t learn from their own mistakes, either. Their senseless Gorsuch filibuster will eventually come back to bite them, and we’ll be watching with a giant bowl of popcorn.
