A Louisville, Kentucky mother came home from a hard day at work when she walked in on what her son had done while she wasn’t there to do anything about it. Furious with what she found, she took immediate action in punishing him, which soon backfired on her.

Barbara Wilson’s hands are full, trying to juggle a full-time job, help her husband pay the bills, and manage her bored sons throughout the summer who she leaves home alone in the day so she can work. With all of the stress on her shoulders, in addition to being out of a car and having to rely on a rental, the last thing Wilson needed was to walk into trouble when she got home.

The irate mother immediately took matters into her own hands when she saw the time her boys had wasted away all day, having done nothing she asked. As punishment for his laziness, she sent her 15-year-old son, Travis Durham, outside in the heat to mow a couple of the neighbors’ lawns and learn what work ethic feels like. This discipline backfired on Wilson, who was trying to do the responsible thing.

According to WDRB, Travis not only mowed the two neighbors’ lawns his mother told him to do, but he cut eight lawns before coming back in with a huge smile on his face. “He loves doing it,” Wilson said. In fact, he enjoyed the productive “punishment” so much, that he hasn’t stopped mowing lawns all day, every day, for free, bringing his brothers and cousin along with him, all without Wilson suggesting it.

The 14 and 15-year-old boys go door-to-door with donated equipment, shocking residents with their offer, but they have faced some backlash for their free service. “Because they’re young black males, people are a little afraid to open their door,” Wilson said. “They just shut the door, say ‘no thank you.'” She explained that hasn’t stopped the boys who love cutting grass since it keeps them out of trouble and beats boredom.

Wilson’s one-time punishment backfired and has created extra work for herself in having to drive and drop the boys twice a day in different neighborhoods to mow for free. However, she’s more than happy for the task considering the incredible way her kids are keeping busy while helping the community.

“They have two lawn mowers right now, the rent-a-car, we’ll load them up, drop them off to a community in the morning, pick them up at lunch, take them to a different community, pick them up when I get off work,” Wilson explained, who said she coordinates with her husband who shares in some of the driving duties.

With so many entitled kids out there who have too much and no discipline, it’s refreshing to see kids like these working hard in the heat and doing it for free. It started with incredible parents willing to take responsibility for them and not accept poverty and struggle as an excuse for poor behavior, which is the case with so many thugs wreaking havoc in society. These kids could have contributed to the problem, but decided to be the solution instead.
