Mom’s EPIC Response To Ungrateful Teen Nips His Entitlement In The Bud

When a 13-year-old boy gained popularity as a YouTuber, he thought that because he was earning money, he didn’t have to listen to or appreciate his mother anymore. However, when he came home to find a note taped to the door, he soon realized that mom can’t be bought.

The letter

Estella Havisham is like any other single mother trying to raise their teen boy — just doing the best that she can. She and her son, Aaron, began butting heads as he became increasingly disrespectful and started lying about doing his homework.

Having success on social media, Aaron assumed that since he is “making money now,” his mother no longer has a right to tell him what to do. This gave Estella an idea.

Instead of coming down on Aaron, which might push him further away, his mother drew up a “contract” to teach her son a lesson about money, responsibility, and respect.

The letter reads:

Dear Aaron,

Since you seem to have forgotten that you are only 13 and I’m the parent, and that you won’t be controlled, I guess you will need to learn a lesson in independence. Also, as you threw in my face that you are making money now, it will be easier to buy back all the items I bought for you in the past.

If you would like your lamp/lightbulbs or access to the internet, you will need to pay your share of costs:

Rent: $430

Electricity: $116

Internet: $21

Food: $150

Also you will need to empty the trash Mon, Wed & Friday as well as sweep and vacuum those days. You will need to keep your bathroom clean weekly, prepare your own meals and clean up after yourself. If you fail to do so I will charge you a $30 maid fee for every day I have to do it.

If you decide you would rather be MY CHILD again instead of a roommate, we can negotiate terms.

Love, Mom

Now, it’s obvious that some will be thinking that this teen boy is an ungrateful child who deserves every bit of his punishment. Then, there are others who will jump to chastising this mother for going too far. However, a later response posted by the boy’s mother on social media captures the love of a family just trying to come to an understanding with one another.

“Later, that same night, he came back into my room and sat on the foot of my bed and asked if we could talk,” she posted to Facebook. “He wanted to know how he could earn things back.

Estella concludes that her son has earned back much of the items and has a better understanding of responsibility and gratitude.

“The bigger point is, the message was received. I think a lot influenced his very sudden change in heart,” Estella replied.

“It may have seemed like tough love, or a harsh reality check, but putting it into practice has been fairly gentle. I have seen him trying to be more conscientious…everything has a honeymoon period; so, only time will tell — But as for this week, things are much better and I have high hopes.”

Of course, he’s still a young teen, and it’s impractical to expect anyone so young to grasp the concept of personal responsibility and consequences. However, all-in-all, the “contract” appears to have worked so far for Estella and her boy.

It’s truly refreshing to see a parent teaching their child to contribute and earn rather than expect something for nothing, especially in a society that is raising young people with a sense of entitlement.
