North Carolina is probably the most hated state by liberals after their controversial “bathroom bill.” Now, it seems the great state is taking another shot at angering the leftists with what’s happening in public school. It’s safe to say, the progressives aren’t going to like it, and North Carolina is going to be the center of even more debate.
Is there anything liberals love more than forcing the majority to be uncomfortable for the sake of the minority? If there is, it’s probably demonizing the evils of firearms. So, it’s safe to say that North Carolina is going to have the left fuming once again after one of their schools has built an indoor shooting range on its campus. As the liberal left fights to keep guns off school grounds and out of our society as much as possible altogether, a North Carolina high school is taking a much different approach and welcoming guns right in.
An old, dilapidated greenhouse at the Smithfield-Selma High School has been converted into a facility for its Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program. “They get to learn a little bit about self-control, self-discipline. What I’m seeing is a tremendous amount of responsibility that these students are taking – a lot of concentration, attention to detail, teamwork,” explained retired Navy veteran and senior Naval Science instructor Commander David “Mike” Wegman, who joined Fox and Friends Weekend to share about the range. “It’s awesome to watch,” he added.
Not just anyone can enter the range for shooting practice, Wegman further explained. “There’s a pretty rigorous qualification process that all of the student [cadets] have to… adhere to in order to be able to get in there. And if their grades aren’t right, they’re not getting in there anyway. That’s sort of the carrot.”
While the liberal left is sure to have a fit, gun clubs in American public schools were once such a mainstay of high-school life that in the first half of the 20th century shooting areas were regularly installed in the basements of new educational buildings. Students would be packed up for school with a rifle on their back. As a matter of fact, in 1975, even the liberal state of New York had over 80 school districts with rifle teams.
Unfortunately, such programs dropped rapidly in just a few decades as what constitutes gun safety became widely misunderstood to be gun avoidance. Gun ownership is now frowned upon by many progressive propaganda pushing public schools. Familiarity with weapons is no longer given the accolades it deserves for keeping citizens safe.
With many schools taking on the “zero tolerance” policy and being forced into “gun free zones,” it’s nice to see that not all of them are caving to the pressures of those with hoplophobia, an unrealistic and irrational fear of weapons. (Since the liberals love to throw around their phobia words, I thought I’d give them one to familiarize themselves with.)
Taking such programs from our schools has stripped our nation of part of its foundation. As Charles C. W. Cooke, an editorial associate at National Review, wrote, “The notion that guns should form a part of education has a rich pedigree in our republic. In 1785, Thomas Jefferson wrote to his 15-year-old nephew Peter Carr with some scholarly advice. … Jefferson counseled that ‘a strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercise, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks.'”
We can only hope that Smithfield-Selma High School is setting the example for other schools across our nation and that other public school systems will reintroduce important programs like this back into the curriculum. Unfortunately, I don’t see that happening. There’s just not enough “safe spaces” for the liberals to be able to handle such a “triggering” club on campus. So, for now, we will just have to say: Kudos, North Carolina. You’ve done it again. We can only pray the rest of our nation follows in your footsteps.
