Barack Obama is about to leave office, and as we all know, he’s not too happy that Donald Trump will be taking his place — but his disdain is about to get so much worse after the Senate just gave Trump a “welcoming gift.” While many Americans will be cheering, there’s little doubt that Obama is going to be downright furious after the Senate just gave Trump the matches needed to light Obama’s entire legacy on fire.
After debating for seven hours, the lawmakers in the Senate finally voted early this morning to pass a budget. The budget, which was introduced late last night, laid the groundwork for President-elect Donald Trump to pull off the most important legislative initiative our country has ever faced, wiping out Barack Obama’s disastrous legacy.
Senators began voting on the 19 amendments to the resolution at about 6:30 pm Wednesday before passing the budget measure about 1:30 am Thursday morning. The senators voted 51-48 to approve a budget resolution which will likely be used by Republicans to accomplish what most assumed was impossible: repeal the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare.
The disastrous health care legislation, which is costing Americans billions of dollars, was put on the chopping block with last night’s budget approval vote. The health care law is much-hated among everyday Americans for its expensive premiums and lack of actual coverage due to devastating deductibles, but thanks to this “welcoming gift” from our Senate, Donald Trump can now repeal it rather easily.
“When Obamacare’s supporters forced their partisan law on our country, they promised an easy-to-use system; one that would lower premiums and out-of-pocket health care costs; one that would foster choice and allow families to keep the plans and doctors they liked,” said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky, according to USA Today. “But it didn’t take long for the American people to discover the truth about Obamacare. Too many have been personally hurt by this law. Too many feel they’re worse off than they were before Obamacare.”
Citing the repeal of Obamacare as one of his main goals, President-elect Donald Trump now has the vehicle needed to achieve just that after Republicans used a procedural tactic known as “budget reconciliation” to prevent Senate Democrats from being able to block an Obamacare repeal. The procedure allows the Senate to pass a repeal with only a simple majority of 51 votes rather than the 60-vote supermajority required for most major bills.
With republicans securing 52 seats in the Senate, a repeal now seems highly likely. The resolution that the Senate passed early Thursday directs key committees to write draft legislation by January 27 to repeal the health care law.
As Americans wait with bated breath, hoping that this horrific excuse for a health care law is finally removed, many Democrats are scared there is nothing to replace the law with yet. However, when a doctor removes a cancerous tumor, what does he replace it with? Let’s just remove the law and let the free market run its course. The government already screwed up the nation’s health care once by shoving Obamacare down our throats, and drafting a new, equally bad, and hastily written law will only make it worse.
