Among all the terrible terror attacks our country has suffered, one of the worst was the Boston Marathon bombing. Two young men, brothers, used pressure cooker bombs to attack the crowds at the famous, yearly event. The terror attack left numerous wounded and dead. It sparked a manhunt that lasted for days.

The tragic event left a scar on the City of Boston. Since then, the yearly marathon is a reminder of the dangers we continue to face as a nation. We can never lower our guard against terrorism. Even today, the threat of radical Islamic terrorism remains one of our biggest problems.

Thanks to President Donald Trump, we have made great gains against our enemies. ISIS has been largely defeated in Syria and Iraq. Yet there are still major threats against us. Terrorists lurk in numerous countries around the world. They continue to plot and look for ways to infiltrate the U.S. And of course, the leaders of Iran remain one of the biggest state funders of terrorism.

One of the ways ISIS inflicts harm on our country is by recruiting Americans. These people agree to aid the terror network, either by providing material support or plotting their own attacks. It is a serious threat that law enforcement must address.

Now, it looks like police have apprehended the son of a police captain, the very captain that first responded to the Boston bombing. He has pleaded guilty of planning his own terrorist attack, in the name of ISIS.

The son of a police captain who was one of the first responders at the scene of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing pleaded guilty Monday to plotting an ISIS-style attack.

Alexander Ciccolo faces 20 years in prison for plotting to use guns and homemade bombs to attack a college campus to support the Islamic State group. Sentencing has been scheduled for September.

Ciccolo was arrested in July 2015 after he received four guns he ordered from a person who was cooperating with the FBI, as Fox News previously reported. Boston police Capt. Robert Ciccolo tipped off authorities after his son said he wanted to join the Islamic State group.

Prosecutors said Ciccolo told the person cooperating with authorities that he planned to commit acts of terrorism to support ISIS, including attacking an unidentified university using assault rifles and homemade bombs similar to the pressure cooker bombs used in the deadly 2013 Boston Marathon attack. We’ll get to the tragic irony of this case. But was Ciccolo the dumbest terrorist ever? His dad is a police captain for the BPD. He helped confront a major terrorist attack five years ago. And this guy tells him he wants to join ISIS?

I guess he’s got some family issues to be sure. But then he admits to an FBI informant that he’s buying the guns to commit terrorism. I’m no criminal, but I think the first rule of breaking the law is to not tell everyone that you plan to do it. I guess the FBI didn’t have to work too hard to take this guy down.

If only all terrorists were this stupid.

Ciccolo was seen buying a pressure cooker shortly before his arrest, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors say agents found partially made Molotov cocktails in Ciccolo’s apartment after he was arrested. Investigators said posts on Ciccolo’s Facebook page included a photo of a dead American soldier that said “Thank you Islamic State!”

Federal authorities said Ciccolo’s case is a reminder that ‘homegrown’ radicalization remains a threat and that citizens must speak up when they become aware of a potential threat. [Source: Fox News]

I’m beginning to think this guy wanted to get arrested. Or at least attract as much attention to himself as possible. Did he think ISIS was like American Idol? If he caught their eye online, they’d give him a job? Whatever the case may be, it’s a shocking turn of events for the son of a police captain.

You’d think this young man would have followed in his father’s footsteps. Or at the very least, has a respect for the law and our country. Instead, he betrayed his own nation and family to support one of the evilest groups in modern history. It’s a reminder that we can never lower our guard.
