A Texas mother stopped at a Shell service station for gas, leaving her two toddlers in the family’s vehicle while she went inside to pay. But then, sensing an opportunity to take advantage of a “vulnerable” woman, a no-good thug carjacked the SUV with the mother’s children still inside. That’s when the fierce mama bear jumped into action, instantly making the thug regret his decision to target her family.
At around 10 p.m. on Wednesday night, Michelle Booker-Hicks shot a man who tried to steal her SUV while her two toddlers were still inside. “I had to do what I had to do to defend what was mine, which are my kids,” she said.

Michelle had stepped inside a Shell service station in the 100 block of West Camp Wisdom Road in Dallas to pay for her gas when a man climbed into her car and tried to drive away. Her two-year-old and four-year-old were in the back seat. “It happened so fast,” she said. “Not even five minutes, not even five minutes. It happened so fast! ”
Wasting no time, Michelle hopped back in the vehicle and ordered the man to stop the car. “I jumped in the back seat,” she recounted. “I seen my two babies still back there. I’m asking the man, ‘Hey, my kids are back here. Stop! Pull over! Pull over!’ He’s not even acknowledging anything about my kids.”
With her pleas falling on deaf ears, Michelle tried to push the gear into park as the car rolled out of the parking lot. But when the carjacker still refused to let up, she pulled a gun from the glove box and shot the man, who then drove the SUV into a utility pole. “When I see that he’s not trying to stop he kept hitting the gas I went toward my glove compartment and grabbed my gun and I fired at him from the side,” said Michelle.
Police said the mother then jumped into the SUV and yelled at the man to stop the car. When he refused, the woman then pulled a gun out of the glove compartment and shot him in the head. The carjacker lost control and hit a utility pole. The mother and her toddlers were not hurt in the crash. [Source: IJR]
Thankfully, neither Michelle nor her children were harmed during the incident, but she still worries about the kids after all that they witnessed during the incident. “Just to see him slumped over like I was just like: Lord, my kids [are] in the car. They done seen me shoot somebody,” she said.
The suspect was later identified by police as 36-year-old Ricky Wright. He was transported to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening and charged with two counts of unlawful restraint and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. While an investigation into the incident is still ongoing, police said that Michelle was not facing any charges.
Michelle’s harrowing story is a perfect reminder of why we must fight to maintain our inalienable right to bear arms. Had this fierce mama bear not been armed, this story might have ended much differently for her and her innocent toddlers. But, fortunately, she was prepared to “defend what was hers.” Her children are blessed to have such a courageous mother.
