Conservative Christians rejoiced when President Donald Trump followed through with one of his key campaign promises soon after taking office. Proving that he is a man of his word and that he truly believes in the sanctity of life, Trump slashed funding for America’s leading abortion provider. However, he has now offered to continue giving Planned Parenthood money, but there’s just one major catch.
While Trump’s offer has not been formalized yet, the White House confirmed on Monday that discussions are occurring to continue funding Planned Parenthood as long as the organization ceases to perform all abortions. “There is an opportunity for organizations to continue the important work they do in support of women’s health, while not providing abortion services,” the president said in a statement to The New York Times.
The paper reported that, in private conversations, White House officials mentioned that there could even be an increase in federal funds if Planned Parenthood stopped work related to abortions.
There is reportedly an internal struggle amongst Republicans about how to approach the abortion issue. Trump has, during the primary, mentioned what he sees as some of the positive work Planned Parenthood does.
“Millions and millions of women—cervical cancer, breast cancer—are helped by Planned Parenthood,” he said during a televised debate, according to the report. “I would defund it because I’m pro-life, but millions of women are helped by Planned Parenthood. [Source: Fox News]
It appears that Planned Parenthood has no intention of stopping the murder of millions of innocent children, though. In a response to the report of Trump’s proposal, Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Cecile Richards said the group “will always stand for women’s ability to make decisions about their health and lives, without interference from politicians.” Additionally, Planned Parenthood mega-donor Diane Max called the president’s offer “absurd play.”
Will Planned Parenthood ultimately stop murdering millions of babies each year if it means they can stay in business? That much remains to be seen. I wouldn’t hold my breath if I were you, though. This is an organization which has repeatedly denied women basic medical treatments, like ultrasounds for prenatal care. They are not interested in helping women in the slightest.
