Many said Donald Trump could never build a wall along our southern border, but they are about to eat crow after they see what he just did. A newly released internal agency memo reviewed by Reuters offers a glimpse into President-elect Donald Trump’s strategy for securing the U.S. border with Mexico, something he was widely criticized for promising voters during the election season of 2016.
In a wide-ranging request for documents and analysis made on December 5, Trump’s transition team asked the Department of Homeland Security to assess all assets available for border wall and barrier construction, proving he is ready to hit the ground running once he is officially inaugurated on January 20.
Trump’s team is also gathering information about the DHS’ capacity for expanding immigration detention and an aerial surveillance program that was scaled back by the Obama administration but remains popular with immigration hardliners. In other words, he isn’t messing around!
Remember when President Obama told immigrants they could vote without worrying that their personal information would be used to find them and deport them? Trump hasn’t forgotten either. In addition to the measures he has already taken, the president-elect is investigating whether federal workers altered the biographic information of immigrants out of concern for their “civil liberties.”
According to Right Wing News, US Customs and Border Protections staffers have identified more than 400 miles along the US-Mexico border, and roughly the same distance along the US-Canada border, where new fencing could be erected.
Some estimates put the number of illegals in the U.S. at this time at more than 30 million, meaning Trump has got his work cut out for him. However, if there is anyone who can reform our broken immigration system, it’s the billionaire businessman who came out of nowhere and surprised everyone by winning a presidential election without ever before campaigning for public office.
Trump has said, “Anyone who has entered the United States illegally is subject to deportation – that is what it means to have laws and to have a country.” Now, he is making good on his promise to employ a “zero tolerance” policy when it comes to illegal immigration.
