Remember the days when you could be friends with someone and not necessarily know their every opinion about the hot topic issues? Thanks to social media, those days are no more. If you are Facebook friends, you often know what the other thinks about the “big stories” making their rounds. And when those highly debatable issues come into the spotlight and opinions are voiced, friendships can collide.
Caitlyn Jenner was the hot topic this week. Friends on the left and friends on the right are throwing in their two cents on their social media accounts. Obviously, those on the right tend to hold the less “popular,” less “politically correct” opinion. So, of course, that means the B-word is coming out. Bigotry.
After posting an article that discussed Dr. Paul R. McHugh’s controversial assertion that transgenderism is a “mental disorder” and sex reassignment is “biologically impossible,” I lost some friends, as you can imagine. Considering Dr. McHugh is the former psychiatrist-in-chief at renowned Johns Hopkins Hospital and current Distinguished Service Professor of Psychiatry there, I thought his informed opinion was information worth sharing. Apparently, this was a friendship faux pas, and I lost a couple of “friends.”
Because the article contained factual information from a professional and was in no way an assertion of my opinion, I wasn’t really all that bothered. But then, there comes the threats and that B-word that doesn’t mean what they think it means… and it’s time to clear it up right now.
Happily scrolling my feed as I sip my coffee this morning, I see yet another status threatening the dreaded “unfriend.” I stop and read to see what button is being pushed for this particular Facebook user, and as no surprise, it’s Caitlyn Jenner. I’ll paraphrase here, but the gist is that if you post anything negative about transgender or disagree with Caitlyn being called a hero, you will be deleted.
Okay, no big deal, it’s the user’s prerogative. But then I see it. Yep, the B-word. “I’m deleting anyone who spews ignorant bigotry.” And that’s when I can barely stand the irony.
You see, bigotry is intolerance towards those who hold a different opinion. So, the very person threatening to delete others (intolerance) if they say anything they don’t agree with about Caitlyn Jenner (difference of opinion) is the real bigot.
I don’t know when the left decided to try to change the meaning of bigotry to intolerance towards liberal ideology and beliefs, but I’d love for them to know that it doesn’t mean what they think it means. More often than not, when that word slips out of their mouths or off their fingertips as they type a status about “intolerant” conservatives or Christians, they are displaying bigotry in its finest form.
I have one more definition for them.
If you are entitled to have and share your opinion, why are those who have a different mindset not entitled to do the same? To throw a virtual temper tantrum where you state that you will not tolerate a difference of opinion within your feed is not only bigotry, it’s also hypocrisy when you’re claiming that those on the other side are the intolerant bigots.
If you are so intolerant that you can’t scroll past a post where someone expressed thoughts different from your own, go ahead and delete them. Your publicized rant and the irony isn’t hurting anyone’s feelings. It’s only providing a chuckle for those of us who aren’t bigots and realize what you just did there.
The only disappointment I feel about these situations is that the true bigots are going to have a newsfeed full of agreement with their own thought process. Personally, I like a little diversity. Sometimes, it provides the opportunity to learn something from someone who thinks differently than I do. Yes, a Christian conservative just used the word diversity. It seems the liberal left is getting pretty good at using a lot of words that they don’t actually understand. Let’s help them out and spread the word with this vocabulary lesson for the left.
