A Florida man, who decided it was his right to sexually assault a waitress, got his comeuppance when the woman defended herself in brutal fashion. The waitress took matters into her own hands and embarrassed the groper, but it got even better the next day.
A surveillance video from the restaurant, Vinnie Van Go-Go’s in Savannah, Georgia, showed the waitress, Emelia Holden, 21, minding her own business and doing her job when 31-year-old Ryan Cherwinski walked behind her and grabbed her backside. It was a big mistake that he immediately regretted.
Holden swung around and confronted the man, grabbing and body slamming him to the floor. It had to be embarrassing for Cherwinski, but it was fantastic to watch. “I looked at him and I said, ‘You don’t touch me, motherf—–!’ ” she told People Magazine. “I didn’t even think, I just reacted. I don’t know how I reacted the way I did. I’ve never done that before.”
She said that at first, she thought it was a friend of hers playing with her because she could not imagine a stranger would do such a thing. “When I felt that happen, my first thought was that it was one of my friends … it was a really intimate touch,” she said. “His hand went further than it should have so I was thinking, ‘There’s no way a stranger just did that.’”
And if Cherwinski, of Palm Bay, Florida, thought that his ass whooping was tough, what happened next was even tougher. He attempted to deny that he did what the video showed that he did.
“The guy claimed that he was just trying to push me out of the way and, ‘Oh, I barely touched you.’ Once the police saw the video, they immediately arrested him. There was no doubt that he did it,” she said, telling People Magazine that customers gave her high fives after the incident.
She said that she was pleased to see her attacker getting arrested for his crime. “It actually made me really happy,” she said. “I knew something like that would happen eventually. I’m just happy that it was handled.” She told People Magazine that Cherwinski’s arrest is a message to women and men that this type of behavior won’t be tolerated.
“I’m not glad that it happened, but I’m glad that it’s had such a positive outcome,” she said, noting that she has received messages of support from women everywhere on Facebook. “I’m glad that other women can see this and know that you can stand up for yourself. You also have the right to wear whatever you want without having to worry about being groped.”
“It’s nice to know that I have empowered other women,” she said. The video of the incident has gained more than 80,000 views on YouTube and has given Holden some fame that she has decided to use for another good cause.
Rather than capitalizing on the video to enrich herself, Holden decided to use her new found fame to start a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for a local animal shelter. “Recently a video of me went viral and I’ve been getting a lot of attention for it. I’d like to take this opportunity to give back to something that means a great deal to me, CATS!” she wrote on the campaign’s page.
Sexual assault is a crime. People do not have a right to grab someone else because they want to. No one has a right to touch someone else’s body, and this incident should serve as a lesson to everyone that this type of behavior won’t be tolerated in a civil society.
If Cherwinski, who was at the restaurant with his girlfriend and his kids, found Holden attractive, that is understandable. He could have spoken to her and complimented her like a gentleman. But what he chose to do was be a sexual predator and deviant, and he got what was coming to him.
