A tense discussion on government funding and border security unfolded on Tuesday, as President Donald Trump met with Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer in the hopes of coming to an agreement that would avoid a government shutdown. When Schumer lost his cool, saying, “Elections have consequences!” Trump immediately silenced him with the truth.

President Donald Trump met with Democratic leaders during a tense Oval Office discussion on Tuesday surrounding whether or not to shut down the government over border wall funding.

Demanding that Democrats accept his call for $5 billion in funding for a wall along the border with Mexico, President Donald Trump sparred with top Democrats in Congress in an extraordinary scene played out before television cameras in the Oval Office on Tuesday, as the President said he would be happy to see a partial government funding lapse later this month unless gets his way on money for to build a wall along the border with Mexico. “I am proud to shut down the government for border security, Chuck,” Trump said in what quickly escalated into a bitter back and forth between the president, Sen. Chuck Schumer, and Rep. Nancy Pelosi.

“If we don’t have border security, we’ll shut down the government,” Trump furthured. “I’m going to shut it down for border security,” the president said.

“But we believe you shouldn’t shut it down,” Schumer responded.

Tensions only rose from there, as Pelosi took a shot at Trump, pointing out the fact that Democrats were soon to recover the House. “People in the Republican Party are losing their offices now because of the transition,” she said.

“Nancy, we gained in the Senate,” Trump fired back. “Excuse me, did we win the Senate? We won the Senate.”

Indeed, the midterm elections were hardly a major loss for the Republicans. Historically, in the election directly after a president wins the White House, the opposing party wins big in the midterms. Not since Ronald Reagan was in office has a party faired so well in the midterm election subsequent to the general.

But, that fact was seemingly lost on Pelosi and Schumer, who have no time for the lessons history has to offer when there are illegal immigrants trying to make their way into the country to cast Democratic votes.

Schumer immediately attacked Trump for noting his wins in the Senate, commenting snidely, “When the president brags that he won North Dakota and Indiana, he’s in real trouble.”

“I did,” Trump responded.

Then, after a brief rundown on what was needed for border security, Trump made mention of Pelosi’s “difficulty speaking” at the present time. “I also know that, you know, Nancy’s in a situation where it’s not easy for her to talk right now and I understand that,” Trump said. “I fully understand that. We’re going to have a good discussion and we’re going to see what happens.”

“Mr. President, please don’t characterize what I bring to this meeting as the leader of the House Democrats — who just won a big victory…” Pelosi interrupted.

But, instead of criticizing his colleague for bragging about the Democratic Party’s 2018 successes, Schumer turned back to Trump and said, “Elections have consequences, Mr. President.”

“And that’s why the country is doing so well,” Trump shot back instantaneously.

Truly, it’s hard to recall a time when the country was in better shape. Unemployment has reached historic lows — most notably among African-Americans, millions of jobs have returned stateside, regulations have been slashed, and taxes have been cut.

Elections do have consequences, and we’re currently living them. Had Hillary Clinton succeeded in her bid for the White House, the state of affairs would undoubtedly look much different right now. Thank God, Donald Trump won instead, and he won for a reason. It would bid Schumer well to remember that.
